With pesticide application in banana plantations as a case, a Philippine innovation project is developing smart technologies that can support decision-making in agriculture.

Behind the effort is the Department of Science and Technology – Advanced Science and Technology Institute (DOST-ASTI) through its ROAMER project (Robot for Optimized and Autonomous Mission-Enhancement Responses).

The ROAMER project seeks to optimize pesticide use in farming by enabling data-driven application and minimizing farmers’ exposure to harmful chemicals.

The project aligns with an ongoing collaboration involving DOST-ASTI and the Department of Agriculture – Fertilizer and Pesticide Authority (DA-FPA).

Invited by the Department of Agriculture

The DA-FPA is committed to modernizing regulatory frameworks, promoting sustainable practices, and embracing new technologies to support Philippine agriculture. The department has established guidelines and regulations for the use of drones and other machines in pesticide and fertilizer application.

In line with this, DOST-ASTI was invited to conduct a technology pitch and to participate in a business-matching session at the DA-FPA.

Here, Engr. Stephanie Anne A. Alves, ROAMER Project Manager, demonstrated the capabilities of the technology – particularly for pesticide application aimed at controlling and reducing pest damage in banana plantations.

Moving towards commercial products

ROAMER is currently at pre-commercial stage through support of the DOST-ASTI Technology Licensing Office and in coordination with DA-FPA’s Pesticide Regulations Division.

The pre-commercial program bridges the gap between research and development and the market. The ROAMER team is currently expanding its business network and engagement with stakeholders from the academic sector, industry associations, pesticide suppliers, potential investors, and decision-makers from the government sector.
